AFRO FUNKE’S BIO:
Los Angeles’s longest running African music event will present an evening of Reggae music and more with local heroes Ethio Cali, Bodhi Rock plus DJs Jeremy Sole (KCRW) and Glenn Red (La Junta) plus host Rocky Dawuni on Saturday August 27 at Levitt Pavilion Pasadena. Afro Funke’ which ran for 10 years strong as a celebrated weekly club at Zanzibar in Santa Monica is now a periodic event doing large scale outdoor events.
Afro Funke’ was the brainchild of Afro Roots star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA’s need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it’s far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who’s based in LA and his native Ghana, together with talent booker and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funke’, bringing on board resident DJ and co-founder DJ Jeremy Sole. Afro Funke’ presents international guest DJs, live band performances, guest musicians, dancers, cutting edge films, record release parties, fundraisers, fashion shows, art installations, crafts and more. Sole spins his unique “Musaics,” or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation. DJ Glenn Red was invited to be the second resident DJ and is an integral part of the Afro Funke’ Sound. Afro Funke’s profile has been greatly enhanced by its unique photo based flyers which feature Cary Sullivan’s cutting edge photographs of West African life.
Bodhi Rock – “Hailing from Los Angeles California, Bodhi Rock is a funky reggae powerhouse who seamlessly blend elements of Reggae, Soul, Funk, and R&B.
The group came together at Citrus College where the members met within the music program and would eventually grow to include the extended family of musicians within the greater LA music community. Many of whom work/have worked with artists such as Tribal Seeds, The Green, Natural Vibrations, Quinto Sol, Mike Pinto, and more. Meanwhile, the band has been making a name locally. Playing festivals such as Reggae on The Mountain several times and supporting artists such as Katchafire, Ooklah the Moc, Collie Buddz, New Kingston and Con Brio.
The unique and high energy Reggae, Funk, and Soul fusion has been quickly gaining attention and bringing people to the dance floor. The group is currently playing shows throughout California and is working on their second studio album.”
Ethio Cali – is a Los Angeles-based Ethio-Jazz ensemble, led by trumpeter, arranger, and composer Todd Simon. The ensemble’s sublime sound is inspired by the golden age of Ethiopian music of the 1960’s and 70’s, filtered through a lens that is uniquely Los Angeles. Acknowledging the diverse musical foundations of Ethio-Jazz, the ensemble also draws inspiration from the rhythmic and melodic textures across Africa, Central/Latin America and the Caribbean.
DJ Glenn Red – Manila-born, Los Angeles-raised deejay Glenn Red quietly continues to forge a loyal following among fans of eclectic music, steadily rocking crowds at the west coast’s most respected venues well into a second decade. With the honest music of passionate artists as a common thread, his deejay sets weave fluidly through time and across genres, connecting the traditional sounds of Africa and the Americas with their modern expressions around the globe. Find funk, soul, hip-hop and reggae in an embrace with afrobeat, cumbia, samba and rumba rhythms on a Glenn Red dance floor.
