The Pan African Peoples Arkestra proves that the traditional sounds of jazz are alive and well, enveloping Memorial Park in their beautifully disharmonious melodies. The group was founded in 1958 by Horace Tapscott under the tenant of providing quality music for the community. Tired of watching famous musicians leave their roots and commercialize their art form, Tapscott decided to stay close to home and play African American classics for his neighborhood. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Tapscott’s death, during which Michael Session has led the band, promising to keep the music going. Recently, they have played at the Los Angles County Museum of Art and toured throughout Germany. The Pan African Peoples Arkestra is not about making money; rather, they prefer to provide music for the people—a belief perfectly in sync with us at the Levitt.
